I got a holiday this week, of sorts. I still have to send some writing to my supervisor every day... this is a mixed blessing, or on some days it feels like a mixed curse. It's certainly not easy. But then, in a way I think it's easier than doing it the way I did it last year... hmm.

I went to look at new guitars today. I also got a letter confirming that I'm going to start getting paid my scholarship today. The two facts may be linked. Anyway, I bought my current guitar about five years ago now, for A$200 (that's about US$100) and it's alright but I can afford a much nicer one now... a much nicer one. But do I want to waste my money in this fashion? I already blew a lot of money on my fancy new computer... is it really wise for me to get in the habit of making large investments so close together? Hmm... Anyway, I was basically looking at three different options: a plain ol' acoustic guitar (nylon strings - all the guitars I'm interested in have nylon strings, 'cause I play fingerstyle) with a nice warm, rich tone at A$500. An ever nicer-sounding acoustic guitar with a beautiful finish and a pickup for A$900. (A pickup being a little microphone inside the guitar that allows you to plug it into an amp & thus make it very loud, or put it through a distortion box to get weird noises). And, a fender acoustic with a cutaway and faceplate and beautiful finish and trimmings and a pickup and it sounded soooo good... for $A1600. Yes, that is a lot of money. Especially considering that I'm really not a very good player and if I did buy such an expensive instrument I would probably have to insure it and also it would be wasted on me and there are a hundred other reasons not to get it... but I want it. Maybe I should check out some other guitar shops before I go crazy at this one. Even buying the A$500 guitar is a pretty serious investment. But, ooh, scholarship's coming in, it's so easy to convince myself I can afford to spend money. Hmm.
